Book Review: TwoSpells

Twospells

“What do you suppose that place is?” Percy asked. “It’s kinda spooky isn’t it?”

“I think it’s beautiful,” Sarah’s mother said. “It always was. Always will be.”

Sarah pressed her face to the window. “What is it?”

“It’s called Twospells,” her mother replied. “It’s a castle, of sorts.”

Twospells is the debut novel by Mark Morrison.

Summary :

Sarah and her twin brother Jon are heirs to an ancient magical realm and its most valuable treasure, an enchanted library. The library endows readers with the supernatural means of crossing into the uncharted inner-sanctum of the second dimension, inhabited with peculiar and sometimes perilous creatures.

The children are emboldened with a wondrous mystical gift that no other being has ever possessed. But fate intervenes and triggers a disastrous inter-dimensional war that disrupts the fabric of time and space spanning multiple universes, tearing destiny a new and savage pathway.

The two must rescue their world from a phantom hybrid alien race controlled by a demented dark-wizard, Jeremy Sermack. They will either assimilate or be exterminated.

Will they be the saviors the prophets spoke of, or will they retreat to the perceived safety of their distant homeland?

My thoughts:-

Sarah and Jon have come to meet their grandparents after a long time. They thought that living near a farm will not be that interesting. But their assumption is lost when they found out they are special kids and they have magical powers. Now they have a mission, to defeat a dark wizard and save their world and that is not too easy. What they should do?

  • Okay in short this book is great. From the first chapters the author has created a darkness and suspense. And quite artfully so. Magical creatures, guardians and enchanted books are some best features of this book.
  • In first some pages we come before a strange animal, next we see the magical castle and magical beings, two youngsters’ adventure. Something great is in each chapter.
  • The plot is nothing very new but well executed.
  • The author has good command over language, nice depiction of each incident, deftly holding suspense throughout the book.
  • It was as if I was also embarking on the journey with siblings.
  • There is also touch of humour especially the conversations between their grandparents.
  • Also I didn’t find any grammatical errors.
  • A very nice cover.
  • Over all a nice book.

Drawback and rating:

Even though the writing is good the story progresses a bit slow than I like. So I had to sit tight and be patient until the story built itself. However once you feel the charm you will not be able close it.

I will rate it 4 stars/ 5 stars.

This book is highly recommended for children of 8-12 years old and also for young teenagers (13-15). However I don’t think older ones than these will like children’s books, except they love magic and fantasy as much as I do.
